ROAR Superfood Scroggin is decadent mix of superfoods designed to nourish hungry snackers the world round. Packed full of activated pepitas (pumpkin seeds) and activated almonds which are crunchy, sweet and filling – not to mention packed full of high quality protein. For mild sweetness and fruitiness certified organic goji berries are added along with chocolately cacao nibs, which add a sophisticated bitterness to the mix.
 
Goji berries are packed full of anti-oxidants and vitamin C. They are an ancient Chinese ingredient that is believed to both increase youthfulness and longevity and aid stamina. They are also packed full of high quality protein for long lasting energy and contain B vitamins and a slew of minerals. And if that isn’t enough they also contain zeaxanthin and lutein which help protect the eyes against macular degeneration and cataracts.
 
Chia Seeds are an ancient food of the Aztecs has recently become all the rage. And this truly versatile South American seed deserves all the kudos it gets. Chia seeds are one of nature’s best sources of alpha linolenic acid (omega-3s). They’re also full of fibre and chocca with calcium. But perhaps best of all, chia is a little bit magic.
 
Add liquid to chia and it expands into a jelly-like substance. Coconut pudding anyone? Chia can also be used to bind food and is fab added to brekkies, smoothies and puds for a bit of texture
 
ROAR Sour Cherries have a sweet-as flavour, with a tart tang that packs a real punch! They are 100% natural, with no added sweeteners or fillers.
The tartness in Sour Cherries comes from their anthocyanins (antioxidants), which make them a super-fruit. They’re also high in essential vitamins, minerals and mood-boosting melatonin.

Pepitas: are sourced from China. Our suppliers make regular visits to the producers to ensure the quality of the product. These pepitas (aka pumpkin seeds) are also certified biodynamic, which is the one of the most stringent forms of certification in the world. These pepitas are dark in colour and supremely rich in flavour. Even people who don’t like pumpkins seeds enjoy these ones!

Almonds: are sourced from either the USA (transitional* organic Bio-gro) or Australia (ACO certified organic) depending on the time of year. Mostly we use the nonpareil variety, which are sweet and have relatively smooth skins. But occasionally we use carmels depending on availability. Carmels have a stronger ‘amaretto’ flavour and a slightly more rough skin.

Goji Berries: are sourced from the highlands of China. They are dried at low temperatures to ensure they are raw and are certified organic (Bio-gro).

Cacao Nibs:  our cacao nibs are sun dried (i.e. not roasted) making them raw – which maintains all of the vast quantities of anti-oxidants and other nutritious compounds.

Our cacao beans are an heirloom variety of criollo cacao grown in the rainforests of Peru. They are grown by a small co-op of farmers whose families have been cultivating this amazing crop under the rainforest canopy for thousands of years – giving these cacao beans their complex and unique flavour.

Chia Seeds: are a seed from a plant closely related to mint. ROAR chia seeds are grown in Bolivia where they have been cultivated by the Aztecs since approx 3500 BC.

*Transitional organic means that the product is grown to full organic specifications but the farm hasn’t been certified for more than five years.

Sour Cherries: are an ancient variety of Cherry grown in Turkey. ROAR sour cherries have no sweeteners or fillers, giving them a true sweet/sour flavour profile. They are Eco-cert organic certified.

The Superfood

Pepitas: are very filling (due to high dietary fibre) versus the amount of calories they contain. They are packed full of high quality protein and have a good mix of vitamins and minerals in moderate levels.

Almonds: are an ideal snack high in dietary fibre leaving you feeling satiated. Vitamin E and unsaturated fats are good for the skin, brain, heart and cells (anti-ageing). They are rich in essential vitamins and minerals for general wellbeing and packed full of high quality protein. They are also moderately anti-inflammatory (i.e. alkalising).

Goji Berries: are not that well studied, but have been used in Chinese medicine for millennia as a wonder food. We do know that they are high in anti-oxidants and have vast amounts of vitamin C – which is good for the immune system.

They also contain the compounds zeaxanthin and lutein, which are known to help protect against macular degeneration and be good for the eyesight.

They are also a good source of high quality protein, potassium, iron, zinc, selenium and vitamin B12 (which is particularly important for vegetarians).

Cacao Nibs: are the highest source of anti-oxidants of any tested food. Don’t be confused with cocoa, which have been roasted (cacao is raw) and have lost many of the anti-oxidants.

The mono-unsaturated oil in cacao is packed full of omega-6 & 9 oils, and vitamin E, which are good for the skin and brain. While the saturated oil is in the form to stearic acid which has been shown to not affect cholesterol (which is the major concern with saturated fats).

Cacao nibs are one of the best foods for magnesium and also contain a sleuth of essential minerals for optimum health. Perhaps best of all cacao contains compounds that are thought to increase serotonin to help with happiness and feelings of satiety which has led many health professionals to propose that cacao may aid in weight loss.

Chia Seeds: have many benefits both culinary and health wise. They are high in calcium (containing approx 6 times the amount as whole fat milk!), protein (16%) and are one of the highest vegetarian sources of omega-3’s (18%).

But perhaps best of all, chia seeds have loads of fibre – much of which is in the form of indigestible calories. This means that not only does chia make you feel full, you also won’t intake many of the calories contained within the seeds, making it a great aid for weight loss.

*Some people are allergic to treenuts and should avoid ROAR products, which are processed in a factory along with other tree nuts.

Sour Cherries: The tartness in Sour Cherries comes from their anthocyanins (antioxidants). They’re also high in essential vitamins, minerals and mood-boosting tryptophan (which produces sleep inducing, mood levelling melatonin in the body).

Sour Cherries: contain high levels of tryptophan (which turns into melatonin in the body) and vitamin A (which helps vision in the eyes). Excellent source of fibre, flavonoids and anti-oxidants.
